Unravelling the Monstrosities Within

Konstfack - May 2022

The culmination of a 2 year master project, stop motion animation, sculptures and illustration are presented in an installation. Sculptures and props are placed dynamically, suggesting an intersection between the constructed world that appears on the screen and the physical space of the exhibition.

Exhibition text

Working with the idea of the ‘monstrous’, I explore how an accumulation of fear can lead to the demonisation of individuals. Using stop motion animation, handcrafted characters are situated into narratives. Laborious time spent making builds empathy, as I try to listen to and forgive the monster, shifting attention instead towards the societal conditions that nurture the monstrous. It can be easy to imagine societal structures as a natural phenomenon, concrete and immovable. A handcrafted touch in the work aims to highlight the potential malleability of such structures. Contemporary mythologies and echoes of consumer culture build an alternative world parallel to our own; a world where flies could speak and octopuses wear lipstick, and we start listening to a talking shell with a goofy smile.
